🚬 ₹45 Lakh Worth of Fake Cigarettes Seized in Bengaluru Crackdown

In a major enforcement breakthrough, the Bengaluru police seized counterfeit cigarettes valued at ₹45,00,000 (Forty-Five Lakhs) during a targeted operation on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. The action took place near Dayananda College footpath in Kumaraswamy Layout, resulting in the arrest of two suspects—Abdul Nishad and Shakeel—believed to be key players in a broader counterfeit distribution network.

👮 Enforcement Operation

The operation was initiated following a complaint filed by the IPINDS Team, which works to combat intellectual property violations across India. The case has been formally registered under FIR No. 0004/2025 at Kumaraswamy Layout Police Station. The raid was led by Senior Police Inspector Mr. Jagadish R., who confirmed the high-value seizure.

The fake cigarette consignment was allegedly being distributed across Karnataka and Maharashtra, raising red flags over a multi-state illicit trade network.

⚖️ Legal Action & Investigation

Legal proceedings are underway under Section 63 of the Copyright Act, 1957, with authorities expanding their probe to trace the source of production and supply chain behind the racket.

Investigating officers believe this operation has exposed just the tip of the iceberg, as more individuals may be connected to this illegal enterprise.

🛑 Health, Economic & Legal Risks

Authorities warn that counterfeit cigarettes pose serious health risks due to unregulated and potentially toxic ingredients. Additionally, the trade in fake cigarettes causes:

  • Massive financial losses to genuine manufacturers like ITC Limited

  • Tax evasion, affecting national revenue streams

  • Consumer safety threats due to poor product quality and contamination

🛡️ Consumer Advisory

“What seems cheap could cost your health—and your future.”

Consumers are urged to:

  • Buy cigarettes only from licensed vendors

  • Look for official packaging and authenticity marks

  • Report suspicious or unbranded products to local authorities

Law enforcement agencies continue to work with brand protection teams to identify and eliminate counterfeit product channels across the country.
